Sore throat: what you should know

We’ve all had mild to severe versions of a sore throat sometime in our life. There are a variety of reasons why someone might get a sore throat; here are the 4 most common types of sore throat problems are:

Tonsilitis:

This means that the tonsils have an inflammation and they need to be treated. Most people usually get their tonsils either removed or take antibiotics for them.

Pharyngitis:

This is when the pharynx (located right behind the mouth) gets swollen and inflamed. It starts to hurt when that happens and people are advised not to eat any cold or spicy foods.

Laryngitis:

This is the inflammation of the larynx. It is located in the top area of the windpipe and often results in a bad voice.

Epiglotitis:

This type of sore throat happens rarely. It is the inflammation of the epiglottis, which is attached to the entrance of the larynx.

Causes of sore throat:

Common cold

A main reason for a sore throat is due to the common cold. The ear, nose and throat tracts are connected; therefore, the germs spread easily in this area. This is why a runny nose, sore throat, closed ears, and coughs are common signs of a cold.

Infection

If you get an infection in your tonsils, a sore throat is one of the first signs that can occur in this case.

Smoking

Being a heavy smoker can also cause a sore throat. Eventually, it can affect the throat so badly that the larynx must be removed. It can also alter one’s voice and make it hoarse over time.

Chronic sore throat

If you find yourself having a sore throat for more than 2 weeks, it can be a definite sign of an underlying serious illness. You should get yourself checked immediately in order to get a proper diagnosis.

Some Remedies for a sore throat

Warm liquids and tea

Drink liquids a lot of liquids and stay hydrated. Consume room temperature water and warm herbal tea throughout the day to soothe your throat. Ginger and lemon tea with raw honey is a great remedy for a sore throat.

Cough syrup

Go to any pharmacy and get yourself some cough syrup. They are over the counter medicines so you do not need a doctor’s prescription. If you are looking for a certain type of cough syrup, you can always ask the pharmacist to guide you. Remember not to exceed the dosage limits.

Lozenges

Sometimes, a cough syrup is not enough to get rid of the uneasiness at the back of your throat. Sucking on to a lozenge can prevent you from coughing and reduce the severity of the cough.  Sucking on them increases the production of saliva and keeps the throat moist. It especially helps in relieving sore throat discomfort caused by dry mouth, overuse, and hoarseness.
