Sore Throat / Cough / Nasal Congestion Q & A

If you experience these symptoms, help is a phone call away. Contact the office to book an appointment, or use the online scheduling tool to find an appointment time that fits your schedule. Treatment helps you get back into the swing of your normal routines as quickly as possible.

These symptoms are most often associated with the common cold. You might also experience body aches, headache, a low fever, and sneezing.

Viruses cause colds and easily spread from one person to another, and you’re likely to recover within 7-10 days.

Newborns and babies should receive medical attention any time they experience a fever greater than 100.4°F. Children with severe or worsening symptoms, or who suffer ear pain, wheezing, or lack of appetite should also come in for a diagnostic exam as soon as possible.

Adults should seek medical care for a cold with a fever higher than 101.3°F or that lasts for longer than five days.

Wheezing, shortness of breath, or severe head or sinus pain should also prompt a visit to Dr. Parikh.

You’re encouraged to come to the office for treatment if you experience a sore throat, coughing, or nasal congestion.

Having a thorough diagnostic workup can help determine if the source of the symptoms is a common cold or something more serious.

As with many medical issues, the sooner you begin treatment, the sooner you’ll be back on your feet and feeling like yourself.

Some factors elevate your risk of developing a cold, including:

  • Age younger than six
  • Fall or winter seasons
  • Weakened immune system
  • Exposure to large numbers of people

Many of these risk factors are out of your control, which is why the common cold is so prevalent.

There’s no vaccination against the common cold, but you can follow these preventive measures to try and lower your risk:
  • Wash hands frequently
  • Avoid close contact with people who have a cold
  • Disinfecting common use surfaces like countertops and toys
If you experience a cough, nasal congestion, and sore throat despite these efforts, schedule an appointment with Dr. Parikh for a full diagnostic exam and to explore treatment options.
